Where the boundaries come from

Official open data — the Local Government Directory, Survey of India, Bhuvan and DataMeet, via the india-geodata project.

Every area carries its LGD code, so your rows join on a government identifier rather than a spelling. That is why Calcutta, Kolkata and Kolkatta all land in the same place.
